In the song “Let Me Live Close to Thee”, song writer J. R. Baxter expresses his desire to walk and talk with Jesus each day. As we consider the thoughts of this song, here are some ideas Baxter brings up that helps us live close to God each day.
HAVE COURAGE – stanza 1
“In the fight for the right, I would dare and do…” To walk with God, we need courage. Courage to do the right thing; courage to say the right thing. The wise man wrote in Proverbs 28:1 – “The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion.”
Consider the words of Paul in Ephesians 6:18-20 where he asked for the prayers of the church to have courage. Consequently, Paul often spoke boldly in Acts 9:27-28; 13:46; 14:3; 19:8; 26:26 (before a king); 28:31.
But, you can’t be courageous without conviction and commitment.
WORK FOR CHRIST – stanza 2
“I will work, never shirk, blessed Lord, for Thee.”
Tabitha, otherwise known as Dorcas, in Acts 9:36-43 was “full of good works.” If we want to walk with God each day, we need to be focused on meeting our obligations before God. Listen to the comprehensive nature of 2 Corinthians 9:8: “God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.” We can do what we need to do through Jesus Christ.
Work for Christ can come in many different ways. For Moses, it was leading the Israelites across the Red Sea. For Nehemiah, it was rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem. For Ezekiel, it was encouraging the Israelites who were in slavery. It might come through you being a godly mother or grandmother. It might come through you obeying your parents. It might come by you serving your employer from the heart.

HELP OTHERS ALONG THE WAY – stanza 3
“Help me bear and to share some poor pilgrim’s load…”
Think about the two stories from the time of Elisha in 2 Kings 4:38-41; 42-44. It almost seems that the personal ministry of Jesus Christ was patterned after the work of Elisha. He was always going about doing good and helping others. Let us, as we have the opportunity given to us by God, help anyone and everyone – especially those of the household of the faith (Galatians 6:10).
WORSHIP – stanzas 1 & 3
Finally, if we want to walk with God each day, we need to constantly maintain a worshipful attitude. “Spend my days in thy praise, all the journey through” (from verse 1) and “I will sing to my King in the soul’s abode, let me live close to Thee each day” (from verse 3).
Like Daniel in Daniel 6:10, we need to go to worship regardless of life’s activities, ups or downs. Sing. “Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise” (James 5:16). Pray often and pray fervently. But read the Bible also. Start your day off with Scripture so it will provide the appropriate mind-set through the day. On the Lord’s Day, be sure and assemble with the saints to commune together and give liberally to God.
If you do these things suggested by the song “Let Me Live Close to Thee”, I believe you’ll find your daily walk with God more productive and more stable.
