When people hear that Christians are not under the Ten Commandments, they often respond, “What!? You don’t think we are under any law?!” It seems that Christians in the region of Galatia must have been thinking the same thing. Some, who had been Jews and under the Law of Moses, had become Christians but believed they should still keep at least some of the Law of Moses.
They also were teaching that non-Jews who were becoming Christians needed to keep the Law of Moses. They were keeping some of the feasts and celebrations (Galatians 4:10) but the main item was the matter of circumcision. Jewish Christians were teaching non-Jewish Christians that they had to be circumcised if they wanted to be right with God. How can you be right with God without Law and the Law taught circumcision. It would be a compelling argument were it not for the fact that it is wrong.
Why do Christians not live a sin-dominated life? In Galatians, Paul shows that Christians live a Spirit-dominated life. Paul says Christians are to “walk by the Spirit” (5:16), be “led by the Spirit” (5:18), and “live by the Spirit” (5:25). That is equivalent to walking, being led, and living by the law of Christ (6:2).
When we follow the law of Christ, we die to sin. “Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires” (5:24). Since we have crucified the passions and desires of the flesh, we live a Spirit-dominated life. That’s why Christians live above sin. We do sin occasionally, but we don’t live in it. Because we have crucified the flesh.

We do that when we obey the Gospel and, specifically, when we are baptized into Christ. Paul says so in Romans 6:3, 6: “Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? … We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.”
Because we have been baptized into Christ, we no longer live motivated by the flesh.
