Social Justice

We have heard much about “social justice” in recent years as it relates to politics. Ideally, social justice refers to equality among the social classes of our society. Practically speaking, social justice has more to do with income redistribution, progressive taxation, and property redistribution – see Wikipedia’s entry.

A modern corruption of the pulpit has used it to preach and teach social justice or “equality of outcome.” But that is an abuse of the Gospel message and delivery. The Bible does not explicitly teach against slavery. In fact, it assumes slavery and tells masters to treat their slaves in a Christian manner (Ephesians 6:9). Under the influence, however, of Christian teaching that everyone is one in Christ (Galatians 3:28), slavery in the Roman Empire eventually came to an end.

The book of Acts shows us that when the Gospel message is preached, communities are changed. People are converted from self-centeredness to Jesus-centeredness. Preaching the Gospel turns nations upside down (Acts 17:6).

Show me a pulpit that has moved away from preaching the Gospel – book, chapter, and verse preaching – and I’ll see a church and a community that has fallen from the grace of God. It takes teaching the Gospel and living the Gospel to have a community that is impacted by the Gospel.

We, as Christians, should always be reminded of the fact that the power to change peoples’ lives is the Gospel itself (Romans 1:16). If you change the Gospel, you dilute its power to change people’s lives.

“For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.” (1 Corinthians 2:2). Let’s teach and live the Gospel. Jesus will change people’s lives as they yield to His leadership.
