3 John 2 “Beloved I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.”
We are in the midst of a time in which people all over the land are in a most festive mood. Everywhere we go, we are greeted with smiles and well wishes. It seems that beginning around the middle of November until the end of December, there is a spirit of love, gentleness and kindness exhibited in the lives of men and women that is not always shown at other times of the year. There is a spirit of giving during this season that is truly marvelous. In fact, some give so generously to others that they are in the “red” for months afterward. Some even give a little more of their time and money to the church. This is good but wouldn’t it be great if this spirit possessed our souls continuously 365 days a year (Gal. 6:10, Matt. 5:14-16). There is even a spirit of forgiveness that seems more prevalent in this season than at other times of the year. Yet forgiveness is one of the great doctrines of the word of God (Matt. 5:23-24, Matt. 18:21-22, Matt. 6:14-15, Acts 7:60). Forgiveness is a spirit that draws and binds us closely together and is needed in abundance 365 days a year.
Having said all this, I too, want to wish each of you a very “Merry Christmas” and pray that all will be well with you not only for this short period of time but for all the days, weeks, months and years that are to follow. I love the words of 3 John 2. They really express my wish for each of you. I pray that you will prosper and enjoy good health as you travel through this life. But I would have you remember that soul prosperity is the most important thing to consider as you walk this pathway of life. It is my conviction that for the soul to prosper we must ever hold fast to our faith (Heb. 10:22-23). Soul prosperity is dependent on praying earnestly every day (1 Thess. 5:17, James 5:16, Phil. 4:6-7, Heb. 4:16). Soul prosperity will only result when talents and opportunities are not neglected (Matt, 25:14-30, Gal.6:2, 1 Cor. 15:58, Heb. 10:22-25). Soul prosperity is a result of engaging in spiritual exercise (2 Tim. 2:15; 2 Peter 1:5-11, Heb. 5:12-14). For the soul to prosper, there must be a fervent love for each other (1 Peter 1:22, 1 John, chapters 3 and 4). Above all, for soul prosperity, we must never forget God (Psalms 50:16-23, Mark 12:30). If the soul is to prosper, we must ever seek first the kingdom of God (Matt.6:33). I suppose that, perhaps, when all is said and done, whether or not the soul prospers is dependent on whether or not we have the love commanded in Mark 12:30.
