Hymn “I have decided to follow Jesus”

1)    Our text for today is Mt. 2; along with this passage we want to pay close attention to one of our hymns.
2)    The song I would like us to keep in mind is “I Have Decided to Follow Jesus” (#299 in our books).
3)    In Mt. 2 we have some information about some men who are often referred to as “Wise-men.”
4)    The shepherds described in Lk. 2 were notified the same day Jesus was born and came to see Him on this day.
5)    The wise-men in Mt. 2 came sometime later.
6)    Mt. 2:2 – READ
a)    The “wise-men” who came to see Jesus had made up their minds about some things.
b)    They believed a “king” for the “Jews” had been “born.”
c)    These men had also made up their minds about coming to “worship” Jesus.
7)    The efforts of these men caused Herod to inquire about the heavenly sight they had seen (verse 7).
8)    Herod then sent the wiremen to Bethlehem (verse 8).

OUR HYMN:  I HAVE DECIDED.

1)    What have Christians decided to do:  Follow Jesus.
2)    In Mt. 8:22 Jesus said, “follow me.”
3)    If the Lord’s reply seems harsh, I would like for us to consider this thought.
4)    Why was this man who said his father needed to be buried out listening to Jesus?
5)    If this man was so concerned about a dead parent, should he not have been with those who were grieving?
6)    Mt. 9:9 –  Jesus told a man who had a pretty good job to “follow him.”
7)    In Mt. 10:38 Jesus said those who do not take up “His cross” and follow after Him are not worthy.
8)    Jesus said there is “treasure in heaven” (Mt. 19:21), but we must “follow” Him.

IN THE SECOND STANZA OF THE SONG WE COME TO ANOTHER CRUCIAL POINT:  THOUGH NONE GO WITH ME, I STILL WILL FOLLOW.

1)    When it comes to Jesus, we may need to follow Him without anyone else by our side.
2)    This is the right choice, but it is not always an easy choice.
3)    In Mt. 10:21 Jesus said following Him would create some hardships in families.
4)    During the Old Testament era Elijah (Rom. 11:3) felt like he was the only one left.

“MY CROSS I’LL CARY TILL I SEE JESUS.”
a)    The commitment described in this third line is like that described in Rev. 2:10.
b)    We are to be “faithful unto death” (even unto the point of death).
2)    People bear all kinds of burdens.
3)    The only burden that has eternal value is the cross of Christ.

THE CHROUS:  “NO TURNING BACK, NO BURNING BACK.  “I’LL FOLLOW HIM.”

a)    Most of us have seen at least one person “turn back” from following Jesus.
2)    Our world often thinks about Jesus for a day, or maybe a few weeks every year.
3)    For the Christian, Jesus Christ is the one we follow.
4)    He directs and controls our lives through His word every single day.
