How to tell if someone is lying

Yahoo News had an article a few weeks back by the above title. The article hit the highlights of a book by Dr. Lillian Glass, The Body Language Advantage. The article was written by Korin Miller.

In essence, how to spot a liar includes these body language tips: shoulder shrugs; lip-licking and pursed lips and lip-biting; leaning back to put distance between you; fidgeting (shuffling feet, playing with hair or fidgeting with hands); brush-offs (wiping their hands down their arms or legs) to subconsciously get rid of the “dirty feeling” associated with fibbing; blowing out air, a subconscious way of getting rid of the “icky feeling”.

Maybe that will help you spot a liar.

What about if the liar is the Devil? He is a liar and the father of lies (John 8:44). Now, the biggest, most powerful lies the Devil perpetuates has to do with spiritual matters. Getting you to lie to the IRS is one thing; getting someone to lie from the pulpit about the plan of salvation is quite another thing.

But liars in the pulpit (whether intentional or not) do not lick their lips and shrug their shoulders. In that context, the Devil is far too smart and subtile for that. He quotes Scripture, as he did with Jesus in the temptations (Matthew 4:6) but he misapplies when he does it.

So how do you spot a liar in the pulpit? How do you spot a liar when the Devil is using him to misrepresent the God of heaven?

By knowing the Truth of God. God gave us His word so that “we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes” (Ephesians 4:14). The word taught and written by the apostles, guided by the Holy Spirit, is God’s pattern for our beliefs and practices today. Paul told the Christians in Galatian that if even an angel (or preacher) from heaven were to teach something different than what he had already taught them, that angel (or preacher) would be accursed from God (Galatians 1:8-9).

A spiritual liar – whether intentional or unintentional – is someone who teaches something different than what the New Testament (or Old Testament for that matter) teaches. In order to know if someone is teaching the Truth or not, we must know the truth ourselves.

“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15).
