The first eight chapters of 1 Chronicles gives genealogies of the various tribes of the nation of Israel. That was their past. Some – like Jabez (4:9-10) – were good. Some – like the northern tribes (5:25-26) – were bad. But if they were to fulfill that destiny, they needed also to remember the sins and mistakes of the past.
So as the historian is writing 1 Chronicles, he is reminding the Jews that they had been in exile but now they were back home. They had been taken into exile in Babylon but they were back home. They were still heirs of the promises God made to David and God was faithful; He would fulfill them. That’s the grace of God – His blessings despite man’s unfaithfulness.
