Preach the word (2 Tim. 4:2)

1)    In the Word of God we find a lot of clear and even very powerful language.
2)    One example of someone “calling it like He saw it” is found in Rev. 2.
3)    Rev. 2:20-23– READ
4)    As the Lord spoke through John He pulled no punches.  The verses just read use explicit language.
5)    God said, “Here are the problems, here is the solution, and here is the consequence if you do not obey.”
a)    2 Tim. 4:3-4 says a time would come when people would “not endure sound doctrine.”
b)    Timothy was told people would “heap to themselves teachers” that would tell people what they wanted to hear.
c)    At the end of verse 4 we find that “truth” would be exchanged for “fables.”
6)    When we live in a culture where people have “itching ears” and do not want to hear truth, 2 Tim. 4:2 applies.
7)    2 Tim. 4:2 – READ
a)    The word “preach” or “preached” is an important word.
b)    This term carries the idea of being the herald for a king.
c)    Anyone who becomes a Christian has a duty to share a very special message:  “The word.”
d)    Paul said, preach the word.
8)    This word is described in multiple ways in the New Testament.
a)    In fact, just the book of Second Timothy has many different ways of describing it.
b)    The word is the “______________________” (2 Tim. 1:1).
c)    It is the “______________________” (2 Tim. 1:8, 10).
d)    In 2 Tim. 2:9 this “word” is designated as the “______________________.”
e)    Later in 2 Tim. 2 (verse 15) it is called the “______________________.”

GOD TELLS HIS PEOPLE TO “PREACH” HIS WORD.

a)    The next key term we have in 2 Tim. 4:2 is “urgent.”
b)    In the KJV this word is rendered “instant.”
2)    This word has the sense of “every opportunity.”
3)    2 Tim. 4:2 speaks about being urgent about preaching the word when it is “in season.”
4)    God’s word, in many respects, is “out of season” in America.
5)    God’s message to us is:  Do not quit or even be discouraged.  Preach the word and be urgent about it.
a)    The word “reprove” means “correct those in error.”
b)    God’s says “speak the truth in love” (Eph. 4:15).
2)    REBUKE – the second word – has the sense of telling people they need to change.
3)    Christians have no right to stay silent or try to hide in a corner.
4)     “Exhortation” simply means encouragement.
5)    Regardless of the consequences, we reprove, rebuke, and exhort.
6)    What Paul described is not easy so he used an additional word – “longsuffering.”
7)    This word describes a person who refuses to get annoyed, frustrated, or angry.
8)    Our ultimate goal is to “teach” the unsaved as we find at the end of 2 Tim. 4:2.
