Are You Listening to Angels?
God has used angels to communicate His will quite often. The first mention of an angel is in Genesis 16 when Hagar was driven from the family of Abraham and Sarah. The angel told Hagar to return to Sarah and submit to her. Hagar submitted to the message of the angel and returned.
Angels were sent by God to Sodom to warn Lot of the coming destruction of the Twin Cities. The two angels’ message was: “Up! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be swept away in the punishment of the city” (Genesis 19:15). Lot and his family obeyed the angels and were rescued, except, of course, Lot’s wife.
Angels are mentioned 114 times in the Old Testament. Fast forwarding to the New Testament, God sent angels to announce the birth of John the baptizer and the birth of Jesus. “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people” (Luke 2:10). The shepherds obeyed the message of the angels and met Joseph, Mary, and Jesus.
God sent angels to announce the resurrection of Jesus. “But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you” (Matthew 28:5-7).
Angels are mentioned 187 times in the New Testament. Angels are usually credible messengers. In fact, when Zechariah expressed disbelief in the angel’s message about Elizabeth giving birth to John, he was struck with muteness (Luke 1:19ff).

But there is one time when angels are absolutely unbelievable. There is one occasion in which you absolutely cannot trust an angel’s message.
The apostle Paul wrote: “But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed” (Galatians 1:8-9).
Paul is clearly saying that the Gospel is unchangeable and unchanging – even by an angel from God. The New Testament we hold in our hands is the same message handed to the apostles and prophets in the first century and it will be the same message if Christ delays his coming until the 51st century. It will not change and it cannot change. Angels have no authority from God to change one jot or one tittle from the message of Christ.
If an angel cannot change that message, neither can you or I. Are you listening to angels or to the Gospel?
