What is life all about?

Building Barns – Postponing
Luke 12:13-21

What is God’s fundamental expectation for us? Why do material possessions have an adverse effect on that expectation?

Take a look at Luke 12:13-21. Consider these points…

SOME HEARTS ARE INTERTWINED WITH THIS WORLD – 12:13:
What was this man’s attitude? He was most interested in his material possessions than what Jesus was teaching.

LIFE DOES NOT CONSIST OF POSSESSIONS – 12:14-15:
What is greed? Are we greedy? “Greed is the desire to have more, to get one’s hands on whatever one can, to acquire without reference to one’s own specific needs or the situation of others.”

JESUS’ PARABLE TO ILLUSTRATE THE POINT – 12:16-20:
On verse 16 – The rich man gained his wealth honestly through hard work. Count the “Is” (eight times) and the “my” (4x) in verses 17-19.
What should he have done with his extra crops (Ephesians 4:28)? Do you?

On verse 20 – In what way was he a fool? Whom had he left out of his thinking?
1.     He failed to recognize the fleeting nature of life.
2.     He failed to prepare for what lies beyond death.
3.     He failed to consider God.
4.     He was selfishly preoccupied with his own life and pleasures.

JESUS’ CONCLUSION – 12:21:
So what is Jesus’ final conclusion? What do you have to do to be rich materially?
1.     Inherit – What faith have you inherited from your parents; what faith are you passing on to your children or grandchildren?
2.     Work – What are you doing to strengthen your faith in God?
3.     Invest – How are you investing in your faith?

So, if the danger of materialism is that it’s easy to forget God but it is natural to be concerned about our material existence, Jesus gives us these words of encouragement – verses 22, 28, 31, 34. Keep Jesus and His kingdom in the proper perspective.
