Convicted
Here are five questions the August issue of the Reader’s Digest ran again from a 1970 issue. Do you know the answers?
The first President of the United States was George Washington – True or False? According to a map of the United States, which city is farthest west? Los Angeles, Honolulu, or Seattle? Between which two cities is the shorter distance by air? New York to Chicago or New York to San Juan, Puerto Rico? According to the latest scientific findings, a given volume of gold weighs less than the identical volume of aluminum – True or False? Henry Ford introduced the first Ford automobile. Henry Kaiser introduced the first Kaiser automobile – True or False?
The answers? True. Honolulu. New York to Chicago. False. True. They are deceptively simple. These are only half of the questions ran by Reader’s Digest. According to the magazine, not one in one hundred people can get all ten answers correct. But they are so simple.
Reader’s Digest says that the test is not of your knowledge. It is of your conviction, the ability to stick with what you believe is true.
Satan does the same thing – ever since he asked Eve the question – “Has God indeed said…?” Satan does his best to cause us to doubt Jesus Christ. To doubt His ability to save us based on His word. To doubt His ability to provide for our needs. To doubt His willingness to punish us for disobedience. In any way, in every way, Satan wants us to doubt what we believe to be true.

But we need to keep ourselves immersed in the Word of God in order to fight Satan’s schemes. When you spend time with Jesus, you can have the same conviction that Martha had in John 11:27. She said, “I myself have believed that you yourself are the Christ, the Son of God….” This is my translation. The verb “I believe” translates the perfect tense verb which presents something done in the past but with consequences still felt in the present.
What Martha is saying is that she came to faith in the past and she still stands in that faith in the present. In other words, she is saying that she is convicted. No one was going to persuade Martha differently.
When you study the word of God and you know that you know what you know, you are convicted. Paul had that same conviction (2 Timothy 1:12).
Don’t let the world’s questions throw you into doubt. Spend time in God’s word and you’ll be convicted.
Your fellow-servant in Christ,
