The Freedom of a Skeleton
When I was in school at Freed-Hardeman, I took a class in Human Anatomy and Physiology. One of the requirements of the class was to memorize and be able to locate some 100+ bones in the human body. The human skeleton is quite an extraordinary creation by Almighty God! In 1867, an engineer demonstrated that the arrangement of bone cells form the lightest structure, made of the least materials, to support the body’s weight.
Many know that the human body has 206 bones in its skeleton, give or take a few. One key function of the skeleton is movement. Richard Selzer said that bone is power “lest man be but another slithering earth-noser.” Our skeletons allow us to move, run, jump, etc. Our locomotion would be no more than sliding along like a slug, if it weren’t for bones. Bones do not burden us; they free us.
The same principle is true with the Law of God. Some fellow Christians suggest that we are not under “law” but only under “grace.” They suggest that law is bad. Law hinders us. Law keeps us from “experiencing God” as we should. Consequently, they suggest that we are under grace, grace, grace. On the contrary, law does not burden us; it frees us.
This entire Daily Droplets would not hold the verses that teach obedience to the commands of God. Think about law as the skeleton of our lives. Which allows more growth and more freedom: “Thou shalt not steal” or “You may own two hundred goats, five hundred camels, etc.?” Obviously the negative command allows us more freedom. It allows us to move. It allows us to grow. Commands and principles tell us what we cannot do. They define sin for us. Paul said, “I would not have known covetousness except the law had said, ‘You shall not covet’” (Romans 7:7).

But the Law of Moses was only the prelude to a greater law – the Law of Christ. It is a law truly based on and motivated by love: “A new commandment I give unto you, that you love one another” (John 13:34). Remember Jesus summarized the law by saying, “Love the Lord your God with all… and love your neighbor as yourself” (Matt. 22:37-38). But, it is law nonetheless.
It is the Law of Christ that gives us freedom. It has made us free from the law of sin and death – Romans 8:2. Some believe “Thou shalt not commit adultery” and “Free fornication” are needlessly restrictive. But they are not. When humans engage in immorality like animals, they miss out on the long-term benefits of intimacy and stability that marriage was intended to provide. Lawful marriage frees us to enjoy the blessings as God desires.
Look at the lives of people who run rampant in their immorality. Their lives have become a tangled web of deception and fear and pure misery. They have broken God’s laws. They thought they could move with absolute freedom, without being restricted by their skeleton. But anyone knows that a broken bone immobilizes the body.
God’s laws, when broken, do the same. — Paul Holland
