Cairn

“Balanced Rocks”

I first heard the word “cairn” only a couple of days ago (that probably says
more about me than I should admit). The concept behind the word has intrigued
me though.

A “cairn”, according to the brief research I’ve done, is basically a stack of
rocks. These have apparently been around for centuries, and have been used to
mark boundaries, graves, and other notable spots. Today they have become an art
form. (There are several videos of this on YouTube for those who are
interested.)

On a hike in September I came upon a cairn while on a trail near Crossville,
Tennessee. More recently I came upon several cairns constructed by a man who
lives near Poplar, North Carolina. No mortar was used to construct these
creations; just rocks stacked on rocks. I can only imagine how much time and
patience was needed to find the right rocks and put them in the right positions
to achieve the final form.

I’ve mentioned in previous “LightGrams” the memorial stones found in Joshua 4.
When Israel crossed over the Jordan River to take possession of the Promised
Land, God commanded that each of the twelve tribes take a stone from the
temporarily-dried river bed. These were to serve as a memorial for future
generations of the great power and faithfulness of God. Joshua then “set up”

I now wonder if he might have constructed one of
these cairns.

This concept also makes me consider again the words of Peter: “Coming to [Jesus]
as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious,
you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy
priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus
Christ” (1 Peter 2:4,5).

The cairns I viewed this week in Poplar were composed of rocks of many shapes
and sizes. Some were rocks I probably would have discarded as being unsuitable.
But the skilled builder knew how to fit them together to form something special.

Paul used a different analogy in 1 Corinthians 12 to describe the church, but
some of his statements fit the idea of cairns: “… But God composed the body
… And God has appointed these in the church … Now you are the body of
Christ, and members individually” (1 Corinthians 12:24,28,27). What a beautiful
sight is the church!

We are the rocks God has made. Peter adds that we are living rocks. When we
lie separately from one another, we’re not very remarkable. But when we allow
God to place us in just the right spot at just the right angle – be prepared to
be amazed!
