Saved people are to be holy people

The theme of the Bible is: The salvation of man through Jesus Christ to the glory of God. As we progress through the Bible from the sin of mankind, we come to the calling and formation of a new people through the seed of Abraham.

When God brought the nation of Israel out of slavery in Egypt, He formed them into a nation at Mt. Sinai, giving them the Law – the Law of Moses. At Mt. Sinai, God called them to be – among other things – a holy nation (Exo. 19:6). Israel was to be holy.

Holiness is a challenge and a test. It is a challenge to be like God in His holiness and it is a test to see if we are willing to separate ourselves from the world to the degree that God calls us (Exodus 20:20). Holiness – being separate from the world – is not optional.

We begin today reading the book of Leviticus. The book of Leviticus – called wayiqra in Hebrew – “And God called” – is about holiness. Holiness first on the part of the priests and in regards to worship; holiness, secondly, on the part of the people relative to their daily living. I might suggest that the theme verses for the book of Leviticus are 11:44-45.

As you read Leviticus, keep in mind that its principle of holiness – separate from the world – is also necessary for Christians.
