What the New Testament says about mothers

1.    There are more than 80 places in the New Testament which use the word “mother.”
2.    Let’s start with Mt. 2:11 – READ

1)    One of the most beautiful words in our language may be the word “with.”
a)    A person may be afraid of someone or something unless they can go “with” a friend or loved one.
b)    God’s promise to be “with” His people is an encouraging promise.
2)    Sometimes being “with” a child is not easy – in the younger years and in the adult years.
a)    Jn. 19:25:
b)    “But there were standing by the cross of Jesus his mother.”  Mary was with her son.

3)    If we have a woman in our life – certainly mothers – who have stood “with” us, tell them we are thankful.

MT. 2:14 – READ

1)    Mothers generally have a lot of inconveniences in life, especially in the early years.
2)    If women knew all the things they would face as mothers from the get-go, some might say “forget it.”

3)    VERSE 15– READ

4)    This woman gave up many things – she was inconvenienced in many ways – because she was a mother.
5)    Mary’s willing spirit may be one of the reasons God chose her to help bring the Son of God into the world.

1)    Single actions – things we may consider to be so small or temporary – can affect children for life.
2)    How great that Christian mothers, fathers, and grandparents will do positive things to influence others.

MT. 15:4 – READ
a)     “Honor thy father and thy mother.”
b)    Under the Old Testament era speaking evil against a father or mother merited the death penalty.

2)    The Bible is full of information about mothers.
3)    When we stop to see what is said about just the word “mother,” we see how important this role is.
4)    Will we try to honor and encourage a mother today?
