A mother’s day sermon

Mothers Move Mountains

Mindy Tran is a 22-year old mom. She had been living in a shelter with her 2-year-old twin daughters. They moved into an apartment as they were starting a new life. Tran had put the two girls into her Honda Accord when it started rolling backwards into traffic. Not having time to jump into the driver’s seat, Tran laid down under the back wheel in order to stop the car.

It rolled up against her leg and stopped. She laid pinned to the ground until firefighters were able to arrive and lift the car off her with an airbag. The accident crushed her knee, injured her hips and dislocated one of her shoulders.

Tran commented: “I don’t consider myself a hero. I am just a mother.”

BY LIVING A GOOD EXAMPLE – Mary (Luke 1:46-56):

Mary found joy in her relationship with God – verses 46-47.Mary humbled herself before the God of heaven – verse 48 (compare verse 38). Do your children see you as enjoying being a Christian? Enjoying worship? Enjoying engaging in services to others?

Mary saw herself as personally blessed by God – verse 49. Mary knew the Scriptures (the whole song is practically one quotation/allusion after another from the OT). Do your children feel that you believe they are gifts from God? Do you tell them and show them by your actions that you believe they are a “gift of the Lord” (Psa. 127:3)?

Mary had great faith in God – verses 51-55. Do your children see faith in you? Do they hear you expressing confidence in God’s providence, His love, His power? The last point made in verses 54-55 is that God keeps His promises. You can rely on God.

Moms – live a godly example before your children to the best of your ability. It doesn’t mean you will not lose your temper and yell at your kids sometimes. But, apologizing is part of living a godly example.

BY STUDYING & TEACHING GOD’S WORD – Lois & Eunice (2 Timothy 1:5):

Faith comes from God’s word; this faith was passed along from grandmother to mother, to son. Paul is here talking about his “sincere faith” – this is Timothy’s own, personal faith. But you cannot separate your personal faith from the source of that faith – so much so that “the faith” is widely recognized as a reference to the Gospel message itself because it creates faith.

Moms – study your Bible daily and share with your children – as their age will allow – what you have learned from God’s word.

BY PRAYING TO THE FATHER – Hannah (1 Samuel 1:10, 12, 27; 2:1):

In verse 10, the Bible says Hannah “wept bitterly.” Hannah hurt inside because she could not get pregnant. That hurt poured out in tears of frustration and confusion.

Verse 12 says that she “continued praying.” Hannah says in verse 15, “I have poured out my soul before the Lord.” God, as we know the rest of the story, answered Hannah’s prayer with a little boy whom she named, “Samuel,” which means “God hears/answers.”

Pray for children if you do not have any yet. Pray for healthy children. Pray your children will obey the Gospel. Pray your children will choose paths in life that will help them stay faithful to God. Pray for yourself as a mother – strength, love, courage, patience, wisdom. It is a full-time job being a mom. Pray to the Father for strength on this long journey with many turns in the road.

Moms, you are heroes. You can move mountains by influencing your children.
