Dusty, Champ, and Tuffy
Tuffy and Champ are well behaved dogs. They are inside dogs. Both are rescue dogs and they are affectionate and respectful of their surroundings – to the degree they can be respectful, as dogs. They do not bark very much. They are not destructive. Yet, they are not show dogs.
Show dogs are highly trained. They can respond on command, maybe with just the twitch of an eye. Highly trained dogs can respond to the chemical levels in your skin. They know how to respond to elderly who are having health issues. They can fetch and do other skilled commands.
Dusty is also a dog but is not in any of the above categories. He is an outside dog and acts like he is an outside dog. While I would not be afraid to take Tuffy and Champ on a walk through a china shop, I would not dare take Dusty in. He has little training and responds to few commands. If you give him any slack on a leash, he would take every inch plus some. Dusty’s one redeeming quality, when it comes to obedience, is that if I have dress clothes on and I say, “Down, Dusty!” he will not jump on me. Beyond that, he has little understanding of obedience.

They have some basic moral values and are generally good people. My 4-H adviser in junior high school and his wife were of this caliber. They were atheists, or at least agnostic, but they did not live at the level of their beliefs. They lived above them. They were respectful and caring. They were honest and sincere. They had not committed murder or any other crime, so far as I knew. We all have friends and neighbors like that.
Then there are people like Dusty – no or very little conscience. They respond very little to the “commands” of society. Normally these type of folks end up in jail but there are plenty of people in our society who act that way – almost totally ungodly – but get away with it. They have little respect for themselves, little respect for societal norms, little respect for anything holy and righteous and good. In fact, they frequently scoff and mock Christians who do believe in norms.
Then there are people like the show dogs. These are the ones who are Christians or who will eventually become Christians. They have had their consciences trained to be humble and sensitive to the Lord’s commands. If they see something in His Word that they are doing wrong or not doing that is right, they will respond quickly and humbly and penitently. It does not take much effort to teach and baptize such a person as this.
