Proof of Evolution?

Is Homology Proof of Evolution?

Have you ever noticed how some parts of our bodies resemble parts of the bodies of animals? Man has noticed that, probably ever since man first appeared on the earth.

Before Charles Darwin came along, scientists believed that this similarity showed a basic, common pattern. Some believed that pattern was inherent in nature. Christians, of course, believed that pattern was in the mind of God.

But Charles Darwin came along and he believed that this “homology” was evidence of evolution – slow change over a very long period of time. “Homo” is Latin for “same” and “ology” means the “study of…” So, “homology” is the study of similarities between animals that results from evolution.

So, if “homology” is a basic proof of evolution and evolution is a basic enemy of God, then let’s look at its weaknesses…

WEAKNESS #1:

The first problem is that just because an organ is similar, it does not mean that it had a common ancestor. For example, the octopus eye and the human eye are similar. But no evolutionist believes that the octopus eye and the human eye had a common, similar ancestor.

So, actually, evolutionists had to give a new definition to “homology.” Now, they say it refers to body organs that are similar and had a common ancestor. Do you know how they “prove” the organs had a common ancestor? They say “they are similar!” You can see that – because the theory of evolution actually has no support – evolutionists have to assume evolution is true before “homology” can be evidence for it!

WEAKNESS #2:

Because of this problem, evolutionists have decided to argue for evolution based on the genes.

But, you still have the same problem. How does similarity prove a common ancestor? Second, you have the problem of deciding which genes that are similar are supposed to be from a common ancestor and which genes are not. That is similar to saying that the octopus eye is similar to the human eye – but they both don’t have a common ancestor.

WEAKNESS #3:

Then evolutionists try to go to the fossil record to argue for evolution and say that homology proves what the fossil record suggests. What they would like to do is trace the similarities in two organisms back through a chain of fossils to their common ancestor.

But, the fossil record can be as confusing as comparing live animals. What is it in fossils that are similar that proves a common ancestor? But the fossil record is even harder than live animals for two obvious reasons: the record is fragmentary and fossils are generally just bone without other body parts (soft tissue) like organs.

WEAKNESS #4:

Another problem with the idea that similarity shows a common ancestor is that an organ in one animal does not develop (necessarily) as an embryo in the same way as the same organ in another animal.

Let us give you an example. Legs in frogs (an amphibian) develop from their tail to their head. But legs in salamanders (also amphibians), develop from their head to their tail. That actually causes major problems for the story of evolution which says that frogs and salamanders evolved similarly.

Is it really all that surprising that the chemistry and body structure of humans would be similar to other living organisms? Don’t we all eat the same type of food, drink the same water, breathe the same air?  Is it not reasonable to believe – what the Scriptures teach – that the Creator used similar structures to perform similar functions, changing them slightly to bring diversity into the world of man?

Science supports the biblical doctrine of creation. Teach that to others.
