The wide-spread availability of and anonymity provided by the internet have driven the porn industry’s profits out the roof but have left emotionally scarred men, heart-broken women, and confused and emotionally-troubled children in its aftermath. The sex-saturated climate that now pervades our country and air-waves and cyberspace have led even one-third of women to admit such an addiction. It is a $13.3 billion industry, which exceeds the combined revenue of the three major networks. Additionally, through the wide-spread availability of the internet, the sales of pornographic material surpass the combined sales of all other products sold on-line. Pornography comes from the Greek porno, a shortened form of the word porneia, which means fornication. “Graphy” is from the Greek graphe, which means “writing.” Thus pornography literally means “writing about sex.” It certainly is broader than just writing.

Pornography is unrealistic. It presents life as hedonistic – self-satisfying – when life is about satisfying God, not self. It glorifies immorality, presenting something (fornication) as “good” that is inherently sinful (cf. Isa. 5:20). It is harmful as it causes men to put unrealistic expectations on women or their wives to be something they are not. It also leads men to harbor impure thoughts of other women that Jesus explicitly condemns (Matt. 5:27-28). Unrealistic expectations lead to strain on a marriage relationship and/or adultery and divorce. It is also destructive as it makes women into an object to create feelings and reactions with no basis in a relationship. Women can also judge themselves unworthy of love if they do not measure up to others. Pornography is productive of nothing good.
No sin is worse than others but some have more far-reaching consequences. Being accountable to another person, using internet filters, filling your heart and life with good things (Phil. 4:8) are some of the tools we can use to combat this pernicious enemy of the soul.
