The most recent exhibition of worshiping the earth is the hubbub relative to global climate change. Yet, in the government’s own Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), released in September last year, the text uses “uncertainty” or related terms 173 times and “error” 192 times. Certainly, it is true that man was not put on the earth to abuse the earth. Adam and Eve were placed in the garden to care for it: “The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it” (Gen. 2:15). The word translated “keep” (smr) means to “keep, watch over, guard.”
Yet, man is God’s highest creation (Psalm 8) and this earth was created for our use (Isa. 45:18 – “For thus says the Lord, who created the heavens (he is God!), who formed the earth and made it (he established it; he did not create it empty, he formed it to be inhabited!): “I am the Lord, and there is no other.”). The most important aspect of life is getting our souls prepared to stand before God on the day of judgment.
Let us use the earth wisely, to glorify our Creator but remain focused on our spiritual obligations.
