Doing Movies on the Side
Jeremy Renner is an actor, known for his current role as the bow-wielding superhero Hawkeye in the movie The Avengers. Jeremy has a two-year old daughter named Ava Berlin. In an interview on television last month, Renner made some interesting comments about his daughter.
“[Fatherhood] really kind of it [sic] changed my perspective on a lot of things,” he told the interviewer. “Because I don’t really care about [my career] so much because I care about her so much. She’s like No. 1 in my life. And now I get to do movies on the side” (etonline.com).
That is a great outlook on the concept of fatherhood. Whatever you do for a career, it’s second to being a good father. We would not have had the riots in Ferguson, MO, New York, or Baltimore if more biological dads took their fatherhood seriously.
This Sunday is Mother’s Day and there is the common belief that “mom’s place is in the home,” whether she works full-time or not. I agree. But I would also argue that “dad’s place is in the home.” That is, once someone makes the decision to bring a child into the world, then she and he are obligated to raise that child to love God and to serve Christ. That is a parent’s obligation.

Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate” (Psalm 127:3-5).
Clearly it takes money to live. In fact, God commands man to work, going back to the Garden of Eden. But, again, once a child comes into the world, priorities have to change. A man (or woman) may have to work 40+ hours a week. But that does not diminish his and her responsibility to their children. It might actually make it harder but it does not diminish their responsibility.
“Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4).
I do not know if we would agree with all the decisions that Jeremy Renner makes in his effort to balance movies with fatherhood. But I can appreciate his comment that he “makes movies on the side.” Indeed, fatherhood is the most awesome responsibility any of us dads have. May we all take it very seriously.
