The Parable of the Judgment
Do you have something of value to you? How did you come across it? What did it cost you? Or what have you given up for it?
Read Matthew 13:44-46:
44 The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid again; and from joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. 45 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls, 46 and upon finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it.
Here, Jesus tells us about two men who each find something of great value. The first stumbles across a hidden treasure. If you’re like me, the first thing that comes to my mind is a pirate’s treasure, buried on an island marked by an “X”. But that’s not the kind of treasure Jesus is talking about. He’s talking about the kingdom of heaven.
The second man is searching for a treasure or a pearl of great value that is without blemish. A perfect pearl. The kingdom of heaven is perfect and without blemish.
So which man are you? How did you come across the kingdom?

Are you like the first man who stumbled across the treasure? Like Saul of Tarsus, who, after being blinded by God, was taught and baptized by Ananias and became the apostle Paul and spread the word of God joyously? Or are you like the second man who knowingly sought the treasure? Like my parents who were invited by my aunt and uncle to find a church in our area after my parents had prayed about finding the church.
So now, what are you willing to give up for the kingdom? Are you willing to give up time practicing for your favorite sport or time spent beating that last level of your favorite video game or maybe even time spent with your friends? Are you willing to give that up for some time with God?
Mark 10:17-22 says: “17 As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him and knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 18 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone. 19 You know the commandments, ‘D O NOT MURDER, D O NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, D O NOT STEAL, D O NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS, Do not defraud, H ONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER.'” 20And he said to Him, “Teacher, I have kept all these things from my youth up.” 21 Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him and said to him, “One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” 22 But at these words he was saddened, and he went away grieving, for he was one who owned much property.”
Here we see that Jesus was talking to a rich young ruler that has done everything that Jesus required of him, except give up all his material possessions.
We should be willing to give up anything for the kingdom of heaven no matter what way we find it, because it is definitely worth it.
