An Hour has Glory

When I studied New Testament the first time, in 1991 under George Herring, we used a textbook by J. Greshem Machen. It is the hardest textbook I’ve been through! One of the sentences Machen requires the student to translate is: “An hour has glory.” Brother Herring told us this statement was a Greek proverb. It is the equivalent of Paul’s statement from Ephesians 5:15-16: “Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil.”

If you have not read the Bible through in a year, let me challenge you on this last day of 2015 to read the Bible through this next year. There are a host of schedules you can use. Last year at this time, our daughters suggested we read the Bible through as a family in 2015, which we have done.

If you only have five minutes to spare, read the assigned New Testament reading each day. If you can give an extra ten minutes, read the Old Testament as well. Our family read the Bible each morning following breakfast. Generally, the reading lasted about 15 minutes. I forced the girls to keep their questions (and my own comments) to a minimum. On the weekends, we may have a little more time to answer questions. But see what you can do in 15 minutes each day? An hour has glory. I’m thankful to say that before the girls leave our home, I know they have read God’s word through at least once. Yet, they have been inspired to continue doing it.

As you know, I read profusely. I focus primarily on books that relate to the Bible, which can improve my preaching and teaching in some way. My non-religious reading focuses on presidential biographies.

In 2015, I decided to keep a running list of the books I read and the total number of pages read. I read primarily in the mornings, 30 minutes before the girls wake up. Most of this reading is not done in the office, in my study. This is reading done at home in the mornings for 30 minutes. On weekends, holidays, and vacation maybe I can give an extra 30 minutes or more.

In 2015, I read 46 books. These 46 books contained a total of 13,116 pages. That averages to be 36 pages a day.

Do you want to know more about some subject? How much would you know if you read 10,000 pages on that topic? In 30 minutes a day? An hour has glory.

Why not begin tomorrow, 2016, reading God’s word each day – for 5 minutes. Or 15 minutes. If you can dedicate another 30 minutes to reading, you can master a subject by this time next year. An hour has glory.
