The Nephilim Can Be Conquered!

In a recent Bible class, we were studying the book of Numbers, specifically the event when Moses sends the spies into the Promised Land. This event is recorded in Numbers 13 & 14. Ten out of the twelve spies sent into the land came back with a faithless report: “Nevertheless, the people who live in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large; and moreover, we saw the descendants of Anak there. Amalek is living in the land of the Negev and the Hittites and the Jebusites and the Amorites are living in the hill country, and the Canaanites are living by the sea and by the side of the Jordan” (Numbers 13:28-29).

This was a faithless report because God had told the Israelites as far back as their father, Abraham, that He would give them the land (Genesis 15:18). Most recently, the command to spy out the land came from Jehovah God in Numbers 13:2: “Send out for yourself men so that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I am going to give to the sons of Israel; you shall send a man from each of their fathers’ tribes, every one a leader among them.”

A part of the faithless report the faithless spies gave to Moses is recorded in Numbers 13:33: “There also we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak are part of the Nephilim); and we became like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.”

The Nephilim intimidated the spies and led them to discourage the rest of the Israelites so that they ended up disobeying God and suffering the consequences of it.

There is only one other time that “Nephilim” are mentioned in the Bible – in Genesis 6 in the lead-up to the destruction of the world in the days of Noah: “Now it came about, when men began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them, that the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose. Then the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.” The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.”

Among the peoples destroyed by the flood were the Nephilim! Genesis was a part of the Torah, the Law of Moses. Therefore, Moses is the author of Genesis. When I study Genesis, I frequently ask myself, “Why did Moses write this in Genesis for his generation?” (Aside from the obvious answer that the Holy Spirit guided him to write it.)

If Moses wrote Genesis while the Israelites were encamped at Mount Sinai, then the Israelites had this event (Genesis 6) written in their Scriptures before they spied out the land. So, not only did they have the promise that God would give them the land, not only did they have the command to take the land, but they also had a clear example of God already defeating the very people who dwelt in the land! How could they be so faithless?
You and I should not fear the threats and mockery of a godless society. We do not need to let our fear motivate us to compromise with the religions of men. God has already defeated them. That’s what the book of Revelation reminds us. God wins. Stay on His side!
