The “Real McCoy”

Travel by rail was a huge step up from traveling by horse drawn wagons. Technology improved and railroads, engines, and other aspects of rail travel improved. A Michigan native helped improve such technology. An African-American, Elijah McCoy was born in Canada. He received his education in Europe but immigrated back into the U. S. and settled in Michigan following the Civil War.

Before Elijah McCoy, engineers would have to lubricate the steam-engine system by hand. Elijah developed an automatic mechanism that would lubricate the engine system. This allowed the engineer to be more accurate in lubricating the system and it was a safer method than the manual method.

McCoy started his own business, the Detroit Lubricator Company. He would go on to patent 78 inventions. Eventually, other, competing lubricating systems were developed and put on the market. But, many engineers did not want these systems. They wanted the “real McCoy.”

Every “gospel” that is preached from every pulpit in churches across the country are not the “real McCoy.” Every “Jesus” that is followed in every church across the country is not the “real McCoy.” Every “Spirit” that is praised in every Christian heart across the country is not the “real McCoy.”

Satan is a master of deception. As John encourages Christians in the first century to stay faithful to the “real McCoy,” he tags Satan as the one who “deceives the whole world” (Revelation 12:9). In fact, the verb “deceive” is found seven times in Revelation, beginning with this verse. The last verse to use the verb is 20:10 – “And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are also; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.”

The “great deceiver” will be thrown into the lake of fire. Unfortunately, he will drag a whole lot of other people with him. People from all non-Christian faiths but a whole lot of people who claim to be Christians but are deceived and not following the “real McCoy.”

In 2 Corinthians 11:4, Paul warns even the Christians in Corinth not to be deceived: “For if one comes and preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted, you bear this beautifully.” Paul is criticizing the Christians for this behavior.

If you want the “real McCoy,” the real Jesus, you must let the Bible be the only guide. How does Jesus portray Himself in the Scriptures? Follow that Jesus and you’ll have the “real McCoy.”

If you want the “real McCoy,” the real Gospel, you must let the Bible interpret itself. Don’t consult men or preachers or parents or friends. Search the Scriptures yourself and let the Bible explain itself. Follow that Gospel and you’ll have the “real McCoy.”

If you want the “real McCoy,” the real Holy Spirit, you have to let Him define Himself and His works in the Scriptures. If there is no “book, chapter, and verse” for what the Holy Spirit does or teaches, do not believe what some other “spirit” says. Follow that Spirit and you’ll have the “real McCoy.”

It is only the “real McCoy” that will lead us to heaven. Jesus is the Truth (John 14:6).
