Sermon on appointing elders

Ordaining elders 4/17/16

• In 2 Chron. 15 we read about Asa plus “Azariah,” a man who had the “Spirit of God” (2 Chron. 15:1).
• Azariah offered some encouragement to King Asa as well as some of the people – 2 Kgs. 15:2 – READ
• Verses 3-6 – READ
• Azariah noted how God’s people had been “lacking” in some areas.
• In our time conger
• gations can also “lack” some things. 1:5 tells us some congregations lacked elders.
  1. In the ASV, the word “wanting” is used in this verse.
  2. The NKJV uses the word “lacking.” The NIV says “unfinished.”  The NASB:  “what remains.”
• In 2 Chron. 15:10 the Bible says the “people gathered themselves together.”
• God’s people came together as a group and they offered a “sacrifice” (verse 11).
• 2 Chron. 15:12 – READ A “covenant” is an “agreement.”
  1. In life there are all kinds of agreements.
  2. Agreements may be verbal or written, but they abound.
• Not all agreements are taken seriously, and this is why a lot of problems arise.
• Those who did not want to abide by the agreement were not thought of too highly –verse 13 – READ
• Verses – 14-15 – READ
  1. The creation of a new eldership is in many ways is an agreement between people.
  2. Those who serve as elders are involved in an agreement that involves both man and God.
• Elders are to “feed the church” (Acts 20:28).
• Elders have a responsibility to “watch” for things like false teaching (Acts 20:31).
• Elders agree to “oversee” (Acts 20:28, KJV) a local congregation.
• Elders agree to have a special interest in those who are ill (Jas. 5:14). 1 Pet. 5:2:
• Elders agree to lead, guide, direct, manage, and care for a local congregation.
• As Peter continued to speak about elders he said this in 1 Pet. 5:3: “not lording it over the flock.”
• Responsibilities also exist for those who are not serving as elders.
• 13:17 says:
• In a local congregation, elders and non-elders both have some obligations.

• The people led by Asa were imperfect. Asa was also imperfect.
• In an ideal world, the elders in local congregations would be perfect men.
• Anyone who is looking for a perfect elder or a perfect eldership will always be disappointed.
• Anyone who expect a perfect elder’s wife – or perfect children by elders – will be disappointed.
• Elders are imperfect leaders who try to help imperfect people get to heaven.
• God’s goal is for each one to work together and be a united group like we saw from 2 Chron. 15.
• Will we be part of such a group because we have become a Christian and we want to cling to the Bible?
• Will we be an imperfect person in an imperfect congregation but serve God to the best of our ability?
