The Gardarenes, on learning of the destruction of the swine, asked Jesus that He should depart from their borders. This, Jesus did and recrossed the sea and came into His own city. As Jesus did this, He was followed by two blind men, who cried out, “Son of David, have mercy on us.” It was generally accepted that the Messiah would be the Son of David (cf. John 7:42). Their cry indicated their faith and knowledge.
Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” The blind men answered, “Yes, Lord.” Jesus, in opening their eyes, performed a miracle which typified His work in bringing the Gospel of salvation. Blindness and darkness typified ignorance and sin (2 Cor. 4:3-4) and, on the contrary, sight and light typify knowledge and understanding of the truth (Psalm 119:105, 130).
THE BLIND MEN BELIEVED THAT JESUS COULD OPEN THEIR EYES (Matt. 9:28):
Faith did not give Jesus power to heal them. He already had the power. Their faith activated the power of Jesus. Faith is a condition of God’s favor (Heb.11:6; John 8:24; James 1:6).
THE BLIND WERE BLESSED ACCORDING TO THEIR FAITH (Matt. 9:29):
They not only had to believe, but had to commit themselves to Jesus (cf. Matt. 16:24). We must not only believe that Jesus has power to save us, we must commit ourselves in obedience to Him (Luke 6:46; John 3:36; Rom. 2:8-9; Rev. 22:14).
Of course, they were healed immediately.

WE WERE BLINDED IN SIN AND IGNORANCE BEFORE WE HEARD THE GOSPEL:
The Gospel gives us the light of salvation (2 Cor. 4:3-4). The Gospel gives salvation only to those who believe it (Rom. 1:16-17; Mark 16:16).
WE WILL BE BLESSED ACCORDING TO OUR FAITH:
We are saved by faith (Heb. 11:6; John 3:16; 8:24). Faith does not exclude obedience (Heb. 11:7, 17 29). “Faith only” would exclude repentance (Luke 13:3, 5; Acts 2:38). “Faith only” would exclude confession of Christ (Rom. 10:9, 10; John 12:42, 43). “Faith only” would exclude baptism (Mark 16:16; Gal. 3:26, 27; Acts 2:38).
The blind men’s faith caused them to act. Our faith today will cause us to act. It will cause us to do whatever God’s word demands.
