Turning Fear into Faith

Humans fear a lot of things. Some fear is healthy. It can prevent injury. Fear keeps us from doing wrong and motivates us to do right. Children need to be afraid to wander in the street or touch a hot stove. Being afraid of AIDS and venereal diseases can keep young people away from immorality.

The right type of fear is commended in the Bible (Deut. 6:2; Pro. 14:26-27; Heb. 11:7; Rev. 14:7). But what about irrational fears? What about fears that degenerate into phobias? We are not to live in  a state of fearfulness to the point of living scared and being hindered from confident living and peace within. We need to face our difficulties with courage and confidence that God is encouraging us toward victory.

What are some steps we can take to overcome irrational fears and turn fear into faith? Begin with knowledge. We need to know God and know that God wants us to live an abundant life (John 10:10), a life that is not paralyzed by irrational fears. Second, we need to confront our fears. Just like confessing our sins has power to help us overcome sin, so confronting our fears and acknowledging our fears help us to overcome them. Dr. Joseph Wolpe is considered the father of desensitization. Desensitization is the slow, gradual confrontation of our fears, to see that they are, in fact, irrational.

Reflecting on our past, sometimes with the help of a psychologist, can help us learn if anything from our past might be causing irrational fears today. This is the strength of Freud’s psychoanalysis. Of course, we need to exercise faith in God. What we believe affects our emotions and our behavior. If we change what we believe, we can change our behavior and our fears.

The Bible tells us that there is no fear in love (1 John 4:18). So, we need to reflect on the love God has for us, the love our family has for us, as well as the love that our friends have for us. Then we might need to change the way we think. As with our beliefs, our thinking affects our behavior and our feelings. If we let our fears control us, then we have fallen into a negative, pessimistic mindset. We need to think on good things (Phil. 4:8).

We need to learn how to relax, to take deep breaths, to count to 10, 20 or 100, and to lower our heart rate. Stress, caused from fear, can create a cycle that feeds the fear. We need to use any and all of these methods to control our fear and turn that negative emotion into something positive.

I wish you well as you seek to overcome your fears.
