Samuel   Sermon

  • Samuel’s life can be summed up by the first 25 chapters First Samuel.
  • These 25 chapters can be divided into 4 main or key sections.
  • Section 1 is 1 Sam. 1:1-4:1. Think of this as the early years – birth to just prior to the teen years.
  • Section 2 of Samuel’s life is 1 Sam. 4:1-7:2.
  • Section 3 in Samuel’s life is when he would have been about 25-50 years old.
  • This third period was the time of his public ministry (1 Sam. 7:3-7:17).
  • Samuel’s fourth and final period of life would have been from about age 50 till the time of his death.
  • For this fourth period (1 Sam. 8:1-25:1), we might sum it up as Samuel’s “personal ministry.”
  • It was during this time Samuel appointed his sons as judges over Israel.

PRACTICAL POINTS FROM THE LIFE OF THIS ANCIENT PROPHET.

  • In 1 Sam. 2:18 (1st section of this man’s life) Samuel is described as a “child.”
    1. Mom came to see him with some clothing each year (1 Sam. 2:19).
    2. Samuel continued to grow (1 Sam. 2:26), but 1 Sam. 3:1 still describes him as a “child.”
  • 1 Sam. 3:1 says messages from God were “precious.”
  • The end of this verse says “visions were rare.”
  • Eli went to bed (1 Sam. 3:2).
  • Samuel was in the temple (1 Sam. 3:3).
  • 1 Sam. 3:4 – READ
  • Samuel receive a message, but it was not just any message – his message was from GOD.
  • Another message from God came to Samuel (verse 6) and Samuel went to Eli again.
  • Verse 8 tells us Samuel received a third message – READ
  • A message from God exists. Unlike what we find in 1 Sam., this message is available to all.
  • God’s message is in a document we known as the Bible.
  • God’s message to us is fairly plan: Sin and the solution!
  • God has given His message, but many do not want to hear it.
  • 1 Sam. 3:17-18 tells us how Samuel and Eli reacted to God’s message – READ
  • Samuel shared the message; he did not hold back any part of what God had revealed.

WHAT SAMUEL RELAYED TO ELI WAS DIFFICULT TO SHARE.

  • 1 Sam. 3:13 says Eli did not restrain his children and this would result in some terrible consequences.
  • Maybe we have had to tell a parent they were failing to restrain their children.
    1. 1 Sam. 3 reminds us of how there are times when difficult information needs to be communicated.
  • If there are some problems parents are not realizing, staying silent will likely not do them any favors.
  1. Not discussing other matters because they hard is a cop-out.
  • There are congregations where elders are faced with some difficult things to discuss with someone.
  • Sometimes we need to have the hard conversations with people.
  • The life of Samuel teaches us to do what is right and be obedient, even when tasks are hard.

SAMUEL – A GREAT SERVANT (HEB. 11).

  • 1 Sam. (1 Sam. 8:1) we are told Samuel was “old.”
    1. Upon hearing this request Samuel prayed (1 Sam. 8:6). Sought God’s guidance in old age.
  • If the devil can’t get us in the younger years, he is not going to ignore us in the later years.
  • Regardless of our age, we need to be focused on the message we have from God.

SAMUEL – UN GRAN SIERVO (HEB 11).

1) 1 Sam. (1 Samuel 8: 1) se nos dice que Samuel era “viejo”.
