The Chuck Norris Bridge

Have you heard? It seems that Slovakia may have a bridge named after the American martial artist-turned actor. It remains to be seen what Chuck Norris has to do with Slovakia. But the regional governor put the petition to name a pedestrian and cycling bridge on-line. Assuming younger voters tend to use the internet more frequently than older citizens, that may be the reason Norris is ahead in the poll rather than say, Maria Theresa, an Austro-Hungarian princess. The bridge would span the Morava River from just north of Bratislava to the Austrian town of Schlosshof. As of the time of writing, the poll will be open until sometime this month. Norris currently has 74% of the vote. The empress has 8%.

The same illogic holds for those who want to name themselves or the church of which they are members some off-beat name. To be honest, why call ourselves “Presbyterians”? Where is that in the Bible? Why call ourselves “Baptists”? That’s not biblical either. How about “Methodists”? What method? Whose method? Or “Pentecostals”? Was Peter a “Pentecostal”? What connection does any of these have with Jesus?

Jesus used certain names to designate His children: disciples, saints, Christians, beloved, sons, heirs, priests. He also chose certain designations for His body – flock, house, church of God, church of Christ.

Aside from the fact that there is no authority for those other names, what is wrong with simply being who/what Christ wants us to be? Are His chosen terms not good enough? Why do so many people try to “go across the ocean” to find church names and designations that have no support in the Bible? Do we think we will impress God with our new-fangled terminology? Is that what impresses God?

Let us humble ourselves and submit to Christ’s authority. What’s in a name? When it comes to Christianity, there is respect, reverence, honor and glory in the names Christ has already chosen.
