We should offer an important caveat at the outset… I have never stood outside a building, hearing gunfire inside, and been trained and expected to enter that building and engage the shooter. I have sympathy for the Broward County School Resource Deputy, Scot Peterson, who, apparently stood outside Marjory Stoneman High School for at least four minutes, while Nicholas Cruz was inside, murdering sixteen fellow students and an adult. Some reports are giving him the benefit of the doubt – that he thought it was firecrackers or gun shots outside….
I’ve never been trained with a gun, much less as a police officer. I would have hoped that Peterson would have sucked up his courage and entered that building, for the sake of the children. One officer did… Sgt. Jeff Heinrich of the Coral Springs Police Department. He was off duty and unarmed when he was at the school, watering the athletic field. His wife is assistant athletic director at the school and his son is on their football team.
When Heinrich heard the gun shots, he did what (we thought) police officers are trained to do… he ran toward the danger. He attended to a wounded student and when he met up with the SWAT team, he threw on a tactical vest, grabbed a firearm, and entered the school. In that situation, does training always “kick in” or do you have to consciously tell yourself to have courage?

As Christians, we try our best to follow Jesus Christ. We are in “training in righteousness” (2 Tim 3:16). We are trying to talk more like Jesus, with His attitude, His tone of voice, His words. We are trying to live more like Jesus, with His values, His morals, His high standards. We are trying to think more like Jesus, with His aspirations, His goals, His worldview.
The more we “train” with Christ, the more we should look much like Jesus would look if He were in our shoes. The more we “walk” with Christ, the more our “training ought to kick in,” when the going gets rough. The more we are with Christ, the more His attitude, His words, His thoughts will automatically be revealed in our own lives, attitude, words, and thoughts. That ought to be our aspiration.
