Your Feet Planted in the Word

In Psalm 19:10-11, David writes: “They [the commandments of God] are more desirable than gold, yes, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover, by them Your servant is warned; In keeping them there is great reward.”

We cannot over emphasize how important the Word of God is to us, both in our current situations in life as well as our preparation for the next life. We need to have our feet firmly planted in the word of God. Our hearts need to be inextricably tied to the word of God.

Why? Our history tells us we need to. Not just current history or modern history but mankind’s history. Every story of every fall of every man begins with the twisting of the word of God, as Satan did with Eve, and man’s gumption that twisting the word of God will allow you to stay straight. The Catholic church twisted the word of God early in Christian history. Then the Reformation movement untwisted part of the knot created by the Catholic Church and twisted other parts of the rope into more knots. The (on-going) restoration movement, as I have been detailing on Thursdays for a few months) is about trying to untwist the knots man has tied into God’s word and keeping those knots out while also keeping our feet in the word of God.

The origin of the Scriptures argue how important it is to keep our feet in the Word. If the Scriptures are God’s thoughts set into human language, as the Scriptures teach (1 Cor. 2:14ff; 2 Tim. 3:16-17), then the Scriptures are God’s thoughts! You cannot separate the Scriptures from God. They are His thoughts in human language. Therefore, DeYoung is write when he says “Submission to the Scriptures is submission to God. Rebellion against the Scriptures is rebellion against God. The Bible can no more fail, falter, or err, than God Himself can fail, falter, or err” (Taking God at His Word, 119).

The ability of the Scriptures to give us the one thing that humanity cannot give also argues for the need to keep our feet in the word of God. Look back at David’s words in Psalm 19… By the Scriptures God’s servant “is warned.” Wisdom. God’s book gives us wisdom. It teaches how to live, not just how to earn an income. God’s book of wisdom teaches us how to be better husbands and wives, moms and dads, children, co-workers, citizens in this world’s nations. This is God’s wisdom; that’s why it works out so well. If He is the Perfect Being, then His is the Perfect Wisdom. That’s why we need to walk closely with the Scriptures.

The Scriptures are practical. Yes, they are simple. The plan of salvation is simple, The acts of worship are simple. The organization of the church is simple. What God expects out of husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, inter-personal relationships is simple. No doubt, God planned it that way because — if you wanted some product that would be available in every country of the world, it would have to be simple, wouldn’t it? If it were to be utilized in every culture, in every society, in every nation of the world, for all time, it would have to be basic and simple. In that way, it is practical. That’s the Scriptures. They are basic, simple, and practical.

For this reason, we put our entire faith in the word of God. It is God’s word and we trust God with every fiber of our being. By the same standard, we can trust His word.
