When Jesus assembled around Himself His disciples and then chose twelve of them, He gave them the same challenge, the same mission, the same responsibilities that Jesus Himself had: “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give” (Matt. 10:8).
The role of deacon really sets the nature of Jesus into reality because the word “deacon” is a transliteration of the Greek word diaconos which simply means “a servant.” That’s what Jesus did in His life and that’s a permanent role in the church that Jesus has set up, to continue His ministry of serving others.
Jesus is, of course, the “Deacon” of the Church. Jesus encompasses all the ministries of the church in His own being. Perhaps we could say that Matt 20:28 is the key text on Jesus being the “Deacon of deacons.” Jesus said, “the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” Both these verbs “to be served” and “to serve” come from the verb that gives us the noun deacon. We might paraphrase Jesus’ statement, then, that He came to “be a deacon.” That suggests that the work of deacons is at the very heart of Jesus Himself.
It is a privilege and an honor to serve with, under Jesus Christ. We are working for Him, on behalf of His people. Because the work of Jesus is so comprehensive, no one person can serve in Christ’s role. It takes numerous Christians, even numerous deacons, to fulfill the work of Jesus, just in one community, just in Swartz Creek.
Would you look over at the picture of judgment in Matthew 25:44? Notice in that context that on the day of judgment, people will say, “Then they themselves also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not take care of You?’” That verb “take care of” is the same verb as in Matt. 20:28. Jesus is not talking about the role of deacons here in Matthew 25 but He is talking about serving and these are some of the roles that deacons might serve in the church.

God defines the role of deacons in a very broad way: to serve. Those areas of service are going to be specific to our congregation and they might even be specific to a special time in the life of a congregation. In other words, a deacon might serve in a special role today but ten years from now, that role is not necessary anymore. It is all under the influence, direction, and vision of the shepherds of our congregation.
One other point I wish to make is, just like with elders, deacons need to be willing to give of themselves for their fellow sheep. Here in Matt 20:28, we see that Christ, as the Deacon of deacons, gave His life as a “ransom” for many. The role of deacon is also a sacrificial role: this means that our deacons give of their time and their efforts, and their skills for the good of the church as a whole and for that reason, they deserve our appreciation and admiration. Jesus needs more deacons who give like that and Swartz Creek needs more deacons who give like that.
Pray for our process as we select men to serve our congregation and for those men who need to accept that responsibility.
