Tomorrow we begin reading Ezra in our “Daily Nourishment” schedule. The theme of the Bible is the salvation of man through Jesus Christ to the glory of God. The focus of the Old Testament is – How is God going to bring Jesus into the world? He answered that question initially by separating Abraham’s family from the pagan unbelievers around them. He created that family into a people and then gave them a law – the Law of Moses. As a part of that law – the book of Leviticus specifically – God told Israel – Don’t be like the nations around you. The nation needed to stay holy in order to receive Jesus when He came into the world. Specifically, they needed to stay monotheistic.
Israel did not stay faithful to God as we saw in 1 and 2 Chronicles. We pointed out that the final words of 2 Chronicles (36:23) are: “Whoever there is among you of all His people, may the Lord his God be with him, and let him go up!” This is the gracious provision of God in bringing His people out of exile and restoring them back to the land.
You see, God has a promise to fulfill. He promised Adam and Eve that the Seed of woman would crush Satan’s head. That Seed was to come through Abraham and eventually through David. The Israelites weren’t helping God with His plans. They kept focusing on physical matters and sinful matters. So, to cure them of idolatry, God sent them into 70 years of exile.
That 70 years is the gap between 2 Chronicles 36:21 and verse 22. Cyrus, the king of Persia, gives the Israelites permission to go back home. They don’t really realize why but it was because God has a promise to fulfill. He needs to bring Jesus into the world.
