You May be Surprised How Easy it Is

… To get away from home into a sinful life. It is easy to move out of the house and leave parents behind and one’s spiritual upbringing.  Sin can be deceitful, so deceitful that it leaves room for an element of surprise. The Hebrew writer writes: “But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called ‘Today,’ so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin” (3:13).

We are familiar with the prodigal son and how easily he left home and fell into sin (Luke 15). Christian parents do not want to force their children to serve. Service comes from a heart full of appreciation because one’s needs are provided (1 John 5:3).

…How far away you can go, and quickly. Sin is deceitful in its growth (James 1:13-15). The people of the world were so accustomed to practicing sin that they thought Jesus was out of step. It is the same thing today!

The prodigal son may have been surprised how every sinful, rebellious act took him further away from the love and protection of his home and his father. Dinah was surprised at what happened to her, away from home (Gen. 30:21; 34:1-2; 25ff).

…How great the destruction of sin and rebellion may be. Surely the prodigal son had not intended on waking up in a hog pen. Elimelech and Naomi never intended to stay away very long (Ruth 1:1). But when Naomi finally came home, she was destitute of bread (Ruth 1:2). She said, “Call me not ‘Naomi’ (pleasant); call me ‘Mara’ (bitter).”

…To find out how little your ‘partners in crime’ care for you. The prodigal son may have been surprised that “no man gave to him” (Luke 15:16). You may be sure that sin will finally start paying off (Gal. 6:8; Rom. 6:23). The wages of sin is death. Jesus will comment, one day, “Depart from Me…” (Matt. 25:4).

…How easy it is for the humble, penitent heart to head back home. When the prodigal came to himself, he recognized “I have sinned…” and he started back home (Luke 15:17). Consider how the murderers of Jesus were forgiven (Acts 2:23-47). Look at the sins of the Corinthians and how they were forgiven through Christ (1 Cor. 6:9-11).

…At the love and mercy extended to you once you return from sin. In the context of the prodigal son account, we see how frequently Jesus emphasizes that when one returns to his Father, there is rejoicing in the presence of God: Luke 15:7, 10, 32.
