Thanksgiving in Unlikely Places

What are you thankful for? A lot of things, right? You are thankful for Christ, for God’s love, the Bible, family, food, brothers and sisters in Christ, freedom and many other things, as well you should be. But perhaps there are other more unlikely places for thanksgiving as well. Let me explain.

Are you thankful that a gracious God hides the future from your sight? I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to have all of the adversity that I may face in the future, in my lap today! A gracious God just gives us what we are able to deal with today (see Mt. 6:34). Sometimes ignorance is for our own good! Be grateful for it!

Are you thankful for the adversity that you face? James says that we should “count it all joy” (James 1:2). It is not because we like the difficulty, but because we like what it can do for us. It provides the resistance that is conducive to strengthening our inner man, producing growth and maturity. Give thanks that a gracious God allows difficulties in this world that can produce a faith that readies us for the afterlife!

Are you thankful that God loves you? That God loves us may be more perplexing than anything else. Why does God love us? Honestly, I don’t have a great answer, except that, “God is love” (1 Jn. 4:8). God has given us life, meaning and hope. He has a plan to save us through His Son. His grace is deeper than the ocean. Though we certainly can’t comprehend God’s love, we sure can be thankful for it!

When you think you have thanked God enough, think just a little bit harder! Never, never, never… exhaust your thanks to God!
