UNITY IN CHRIST  PHILIPPIANS 2:1-4

At Philippi, there was the danger of persecution and suffering. These difficulties and stresses could easily lead to bickering and a divisive spirit within the church. The devil is always looking to exploit opportunities! (1 Pt. 5:8)

THE BLESSINGS OF BEING IN CHRIST (v. 1)

The pillars that provide encouragement for unity within the church is the blessedness we enjoy “in Christ” (v. 1). Paul uses a series of rhetorical statements to cause the Philippians to reflect upon these great blessings.

Notice these blessings:

  1. “encouragement in Christ” – The word encouragement literally means “to be called along  side of.” Does Christ at our side bring encouragement? (See the blessings we have in Christ – Eph. 1:3-12.)
  2. “comfort from love” – Are we comforted by the love that God has demonstrated to us? (See 2 Cor. 1:3; Jn. 3:16.)
  3. “participation of the Spirit” – Is there any encouragement found in the Spirit’s assistance in our prayers? (See 1:19; also Rom. 8:26-27.)
  4. “affection and sympathy” – Had the Philippians received affection and sympathy in Christ? Yes! (See 1:8) Do Christians sometimes rejoice and sorrow together? (See Rom. 12:15.)
  5. All of these things are fundamental blessings from God that the Philippians enjoyed in Christ. These blessings should propel them (and us) toward fulfilling the duties that lead Christians to being a unified body (even in difficult times).

THE DEMAND OF UNITY (v. 2)

Verses one and two form a kind of “if/then” scenario, although most versions do not use the word “then” in verse 2. If the things Paul has stated to the Philippians in verse 1 can be affirmed, then here is what they (and we) need to do…

But before he gives them his formula for unity, he tells them that in doing these things they will complete his joy. The Philippians already brought Paul joy (see 1:4), but here he indicates that they can make him overflow with joy! That certainly says something about the importance of this subject matter.

Paul then gives four ingredients that will bring him this joy:

  1. “by being of the same mind.” Literally: “think the same thing.” Our minds are transformed and conformed by the same Book!
  2. “having the same love.” They are united in affection for God and one another.
  3. “being in full accord.” They are together in the purposes of Christ. One body living and functioning for His purposes!
  4. “one mind.” Possessing a unity and harmony of thought.

Obviously, the emphasis here is upon the togetherness or unity of God’s people. In being so “one” as the body of Christ, we are in essence answering the prayer of Christ in John 17:20-23.

Next week we will plan to finish through verse 4. Until then, remember the blessedness we enjoy in Christ and allow that to motivate you to truly be united with your brethren.
