This time of year, for me, brings with it a period of reflection about time itself. Perhaps it’s a habit from childhood, I can’t believe summer is gone. Maybe it’s all of the 9/11 reminders that on the night of 9/10, 3000 people had plans that didn’t matter the morning of the eleventh. Or maybe it’s because my wife begins holiday planning. No matter the cause I get caught up in the fact that our God invented time but is not governed by it. We are.
Someday we too will be a part of God’s timeless eternity, but not yet. So, how do I make the most of the time I am given?
Do I greet each day with gladness as did David? Ps. 118.24. How blessed we are to be
gifted with a fresh start each time we open our eyes!
Are my priorities in order.
Do I put my Christian duties before my earthly ones?
How’s my prayer life?

Life now is not what we are used to or what we expected. I hope I’m not the only one discovering how easy it is to fall down a rabbit hole of time, devourers trying to get away from the strange mix of anxiety and apathy created by the pandemic; Netflix, puzzles, YouTube, internet searches that began with a legitimate purpose but disintegrate into a trivial pursuit champ’s dream. I believe Luke 12 teaches us not to worry not only to help us find peace and rely on God, but because it wastes precious time! We will not be ready, we cannot prioritize properly, we cannot see the forest for the trees if we are locked in time wasting pursuits.
I’ve been compelled to remember James 4:14, “Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” My time will vanish, but I will not. I want to keep that fact before me so that I can celebrate the passage from time to eternity.
