Islamic Morals and Behavior

The goal of Islam, Haneef writes (73) is “to create an Islamic personality.” These are the attitudes and qualities which Islam enjoins and which it fosters in the true Muslim. Once again, “Islam proclaims that the guidance contained in the Qur’an is final, permanent and binding on all people of all times and places” (Haneef, 103). And the principles of Islam are “not subject to change no matter what… its laws for governing human behavior constitute permanent and unalterable spiritual principles within the framework of which the human being is to order his life; as such, they are not time-bound nor subject to alteration.”

The faithful Muslim lives with a high respect for Allah and a fear of His wrath. “Believers are they only whose hearts thrill with fear when God is named, and whose faith increaseth at each recital of his signs, and who put their trust in their Lord” (Surah 8:2).

They have a strong faith in Allah: “All that is in Heaven and all that is in Earth is God’s! God is a sufficient protector!” (Surah 4:131).

Officially, Muslims believe that Islam condemns hypocrisy, greed, selfishness, envy, or the desire for reputation or power. I say “officially,” because it is hard to look at the leaders of Muslim countries and believe they are faithful Muslims. But, we don’t point to politicians in our country and claim they are faithful Christians either.

Muslims believe in responsibility, integrity, honesty, discipline, and self-control. A scrupulous adherence to truth, Haneef writes, includes “absolute honesty and fidelity in all personal relationships and interactions” (91). “Believers! Fear God, and be with the sincere” (Surah 9:120). The online translation has: “O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are true” (9:119).

Muslims also believe in humility, patience, endurance, courage, thankfulness, dignity, honor, self-respect, purity, modesty, chastity, kindness, helpfulness, cooperation, and hospitality.

If you find yourself in a discussion with a Muslim about these behaviors, many of which seem odd compared with our views of Islam we get from the news, then simply ask the Muslim where in the Qur’an these behaviors are commanded by Allah. According to them, the Qur’an is the standard.

Muslims are supposed to love knowledge. “The Prophet (peace be on him) proclaimed that seeking knowledge is a duty on every Muslim man and woman, and indeed the love of knowledge has been a characteristic of Muslims from the earliest times” (Haneef, 97). Similarly, Esack (169) writes that the Qur’an “starts from the premise that there is an absolute, single, and knowable “Truth”.

That view is worth pursuing with a Muslim friend!
