How to truly live for God

This psalm may have been put in front because it contrasts the “two ways” of life. The Bible consistently presents “two men” or “two ways” (i.e. “two options”); there is the “first Adam” (Rom. 5) and the “last Adam” (1 Cor. 15) – Cain & Abel, Ishmael & Isaac, Esau and Jacob, David & Saul. “Two men, two ways, two destinies” (Wiersbe, 19).

THE MAN IS BLESSED WHO…
Does not follow wicked counsel – verse 1. A scoffer is one who is defiant and cynical and refuses to be influenced by God (or man). See Prov. 1:22; 3:34; 21:24. “When laughing at holy things and disobeying holy laws become entertainment, then people have reached a low level indeed” (Wiersbe, 20).
Follows divine counsel – verse 2. “Law” means guidance or instruction. “Meditate” means to reflect and then to apply. “To do God’s will gives man true joy, and to meditate unceasingly on what he demands from man is the very thing which it is worthwhile to strive for in life” (Weiser, 104).

SUCH A MAN IS FRUITFUL
He is like a tree – vs. 3. “Fruitbearing is not a reward to a tree for goodness, but rather its normal function… So here, prosperity is God’s intention for a life, brought to pass by man’s devotion to his will. It is the way man was made to be…” (Ash & Miller, 35).
Otherwise, he is fruitless – vs. 4.

THE END RESULT OF CHOOSING THE GOOD PATH
The wicked will have no leg on which to stand in judgment – vs. 5.
The righteous are known by the Lord and will be protected by Him – vs. 6. The psalm begins with “blessed” and ends with “perish”. The different is the manner of life one chooses to live.

We begin tomorrow reading the Psalms. Keep in mind the “two paths” as they are outlined here in the first psalm. Read and pray that God will help you follow the right path.
