The word father in the Bible

When hurricane Isaac hit the Gulf of Mexico, one story which made the news was a father-son rescue team. Jesse Shaffer, age 25, and his father, Jesse Sr., age 53, rescued at least 23 people in their parish. Several rescued were children and at least one mom with a 5-month old infant. The parish president, Billy Nungesser, said that the Shaffers were particularly successful because “He lives here, he knows the area.” (Foxnews.com).

You can’t help but see the spiritual metaphors, can you? God is referred to as “Father” some 270+ times in the New Testament. The first incident is in Matthew 5:16 where Jesus calls Him “your [our]” Father. But that is only true because Jesus is God’s Son.

The angel Gabriel told the virgin Mary: “You will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end. …The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy–the Son of God” (Luke 1:31-35).

Jesus was naturally the Son of God. He is God by nature, in the flesh. You and I have the opportunity to be sons of God by grace. We cannot be God’s children outside of Christ. By obeying the Gospel, we are adopted into God’s family. “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will” (Ephesians 1:3-5).

It took the Father and the Son to rescue us from our sins, from the “present age of evil” (Galatians 1:4). Jesus could do that because “He lived here. He knows the area.” Jesus took on the form of human flesh so that He could experience our lives and die for our sins.
