Awesome God Isaiah 41:13-14

Who would you most like to meet? To have a cup of coffee with or share lunch? Dead or alive? Someone outside of Bible people…?

Before I give you my list, let me say that I really don’t care to meet these people. I don’t think I would spend $50 to go meet them. I’m just giving this as an example of people I might want to meet if I really cared about meeting them… So, here it goes…

Richard Dean Anderson. He played the title role in the TV show, MacGyver. I loved that show growing up. I thought MacGyver was an awesome TV show, so much that I have had to introduce it to Jewell and Ana. Nick Saban. You might not like Coach Saban but you would find it difficult to admit that he is an awesome coach. Brit Hume. He is an awesome commentator.

Awesome. The word means “extremely impressive, or daunting. Inspiring great admiration, apprehension, or fear.”

One of our favorite songs is this short song that carries a huge message – Awesome God. Let’s take a look at the nature of God that is the focus of this song…

GOD INSPIRES AWE BECAUSE HE REIGNS FROM HEAVEN ABOVE:

The biblical concept that relates to God reigning is “sovereignty.” This word means that God has absolute lordship over all the earth. Take a moment to read through David’s psalm recorded in 1 Chronicles 16, especially verse 31. As you read, beginning in verse 8, note all the commands that are addressed to the audience, based on the fact that the Lord reigns!

God is in control of everything that happens. This does not mean God causes everything that happens but it does mean that God knows and allows everything to happen, including the bad things that happen to us. If Job had been a Christian, at the end of the book, he would have found encouragement in the fact that God promises He will work all things together for our good – Romans 8:28.

Let’s stand in awe of God’s sovereignty.

GOD INSPIRES AWE BECAUSE HE REIGNS WITH WISDOM:

God’s wisdom is based on His omniscience. He knows what means are the most effective to accomplish His goals. God’s wisdom is also based on His love. He knows what means are the best to accomplish His goals. God’s wisdom is also based on His omnipotence. He knows what needs to be done and can be done to accomplish His goals.

God’s greatest goal is for you and me to get to heaven. He created us with a spirit that will live forever but sin separates us from God. His wisdom provides a way, the best possible way, for us to be forgiven of our sins, which is through Jesus Christ.

Let’s stand in awe of God’s wisdom.

GOD INSPIRES WONDER BECAUSE HE REIGNS WITH POWER:

Third, the song encourages us to stand in awe of God’s power. The Bible emphasizes to us that God has the power to do anything that is consistent with His nature.  God never grows tired. He never gives out. He never has to take a break.

You know what I think is an awesome example of God’s power? The fact that God is willing and able to dwell in me! That is awesome! When someone becomes a Christian, God dwells in them. God does not give Christians a part of Himself. He dwells in us. Don’t think it’s not possible because you can’t “divide” up God. God is powerful and God is spirit and God says that He dwells in Christians.

Let us stand in awe of God’s power.

GOD INSPIRES WONDER BECAUSE HE REIGNS WITH LOVE:

Finally, let’s stand in awe of God’s love. We spent time on this point last week so we will only make brief reference to it here. All of creation, the creation of you and me, is the result of God’s love. God did not have to make this world. He did not have to make you and me. But He did. Out of love.

Let us stand in awe of the love of God.

If we stand in awe of God, let us also bow in humble, obedient service to Him.
