On January 12, 2013, Belgian Sabine Moreau left her home in Erquelinnes, Belgium to pick up her friend at the train station in Brussels. Like many of us, Moreau took out our Global Positioning System and followed the directions. It was supposed to have been a 93 mile trip.
For whatever reason – but don’t laugh, too many of us do this – she put too much trust in her GPS. She drove hour after hour. It is strange that the signs in French did not tip her off. Nor the signs in German, then other languages. None of that – nor the two days of travel – woke her up until she was 900 miles away from home in Croatia!
When she finally arrived in Zagreb, Croatia, she realized she did not use some common sense and relied on an inanimate object to get her to her destination. She called home and learned that her family had put out a missing-person-report on her. I hope someone else picked her friend up at the train station!
One degree of separation is not hard to overcome. But the further you travel – both in time and space – the further you get away from the true path and the harder it is to get back on course.
The pattern for Christianity is found in the Bible – nowhere else. It is in the Scriptures where we find the “pattern of sound words” (2 Timothy 1:13). It is in the Scriptures where we have the pattern of what the inspired apostles did and taught, which we are to see, hear, and to obey (Philippians 4:9).

The church of Christ in Rome started off well. In fact, they spread the Faith throughout the world (Romans 1:8). But after the apostles died and perhaps after the next generation, the church in Rome quit holding to the pattern of sound words. They started reproducing themselves instead of God’s pattern for the church.
It took several generations for the church to become entirely unrecognizable but the degrees of separation were tremendous indeed. So much so that the church went from encouraging public reading of the Scripture (1 Timothy 4:13) to persecuting and killing men like John Wycliffe and Martin Luther who tried to get the Bible back into the language of the common people.
None of us will be saved on another’s’ coat-tails. We each must read, study, obey, live and teach the Word of God as it is found in Scripture. Remember the translation of my “motto” – Veritas non verba magistri – Truth – not the words of the teacher.
