Boat of bacon at Kansas State

BACON AND CHRISTIANITY

For years and years we in Christian Churches have struggled to get folks to respond to the Gospel message. We try every new idea that folks can think up to just get people interested enough to at least come and hear the story of our Savior.

Of course we do have some success, sometimes new gimmicks work, sometimes they don’t. One thing I have never heard of a church doing is offering free Bacon for attending a church meeting, have you?

There was story that caught my eye out of “The Blaze” today. It seems that “Kansas State is offering a “boat of bacon” to all students attending the November 8th home opener of the Wildcats women’s basketball game against Tennessee State. Kansas State’s school newspaper, the Collegian, reports that each “boat of bacon” being offered to students will contain approximately three ounces of the tasty treat. Back in 2004, the same school offered $1 hot dogs to entice students to attend to attend a game. They reportedly ran out of the dollar dogs before halftime.”

A first thought might be, “Hey, let’s give it a try, noting in the bible says not to!” But I wonder if doing things like that really carries the message that Christ wants us to deliver.

When my wife and I were missionaries in Africa, many of the other churches and mission groups offered “things” to folks who would either attend their meetings or join their group. One missionary bragged to me that he would go out and hold teaching meetings and pay everyone who attended the equivalent to 50 cents. He said it didn’t seem to help covert anyone, but he was able to put on his reports to his head office that he had good attendance to his meetings. I don’t know about you, but something about that just doesn’t seem right to me.

I wonder what Jesus would do with this type of reasoning? Oh wait, we have a record of what he would do in the scripture! In John 6 we see Jesus feeding “a multitude” of people, then crossing the Sea of Galilee. The folks come looking for him and find him in John 6:25-27. Notice what he says to them, “They found him on the other side of the lake and asked, ‘Rabbi, when did you get here?’ Jesus replied, ‘I tell you the truth, you want to be with me because I fed you, not because you understood the miraculous signs. But don’t be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man can give you. For God the Father has given me the seal of his approval”.

You see, bringing people to Christ has to be about more than gimmicks, food or whatever latest trick you can think of to get people in the building. We need to direct people towards God and the salvation he gives freely, that is what will change lives!
