To know God, we must know and obey His word.
Unfortunately, some who believe in biblical authority misuse it. Two old sayings sum up the problem: “A text taken from its context is a pretext” and “a proof text is often a pretext”. Jack Lewis observed, “The temptation to pretext is ever present in a community which feels there must be a biblical base for all that is done in work and worship.” There “must be a biblical base” for what we preach and practice, but we must avoid taking scriptures out of context to support what we believe and do.
Charles Hodge commented, “Book, chapter, and verse are okay, but not verse only.” When we use a verse as a “proof text” we must take care that the meaning we derive from it agrees with the context. Otherwise we may be guilty of teaching our own ideas and misusing scriptures to support what we say. We need “book, chapter, and verse” but not verse only.
