Can we legislate morality?

Legislating Morality

A large segment of our society is absolutely opposed to the idea that one individual or one group can tell another group/individual how to live, morally speaking. I agree. Only Jesus has the right to tell any of us how to live. And He has told us how to live in His word. But the left in our society doesn’t want to submit to even His basic standards of morality. We hear them say things like, “You can’t legislate morality.” Generally, that statement is in the context of sexual promiscuity – adultery and homosexuality, specifically.

Of course, law, by its nature, legislates morality, doesn’t it? Law regulates behavior and behavior is the subject of morals. Well, one European country has taken the “legislate morality” one step further…

On April 25th, the Spanish Parliament passed a draft version of a law, updating a prior child-protection law. Part of this new bill would require children to help with household chores! It would not matter what the child’s age or gender. This new bill would also require children to respect their parents and have a positive attitude toward school! There were not specified consequences for breaking such a law.

That would be hilarious if it weren’t so sad and pitiful. I’m not sure what that bill says about the nation of Spain or Spanish parents. Do they have no backbone? Are they so weak and pitiful that they have to have the strong arm of the government to step in and legislate that kids have to have basic human attributes, like obeying their parents? What kind of society is Spain suffering if they have to tell children to obey their parents?

Our daughters do their chores because Mom and Dad tell them to. Period. We don’t need President Obama telling our children to obey us. We have sufficient God-given authority to tell our children to obey us.

Once, when we were visiting my brother’s family, we left the girls under the oversight of my sister-in-law. One of the last commands was: “Do not jump on the air mattress.” They were about 3 & 5 years old, respectively. They jumped on the air mattress when we were gone. It pained me to inflict pain on them when I returned but disobedience demands correction and consequences. So, they both were spanked – hard enough to bring tears, not hard enough to break the skin.

We have had to do that infrequently – especially as the girls have aged and matured. “Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him” (Prov. 13:24). Part of that discipline is teaching children to do chores around the house. It teaches obedience, responsibility, pride, and other virtues. That’s what legislation can not do. It can regulate the behavior but it cannot change the heart. Only godly discipline can do that. Today, our discipline takes more the form of: “Should you being doing that as a Christian…?”

Christianity, as it is, is adapted to man, as he is. If American parents do not find their backbone, we might see our Congress passing child-discipline laws too!
