A few months ago, I wrote that perhaps Christians share some of the blame in electing a liberal, left-wing president to the Oval Office. It was in the sense that we cannot expect Christianity to stay strong in the south and the rest of the nation follow our lead. We need to share Christ in the “blue states” to help bring the nation at least back toward the center morally.
Here is a case in point. Democrat Doug McKillip (albeit from a southern “red” state) was a vocal proponent of abortion. But in March of 2012, Representative McKillip argued on behalf of a bill which he co-sponsored – the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (HB 954). How did Doug McKillip go from being pro-abortion to sponsoring legislation to protect the unborn? In a word: Christ.
In 2009, McKillip claims to have been converted to Christ. In 2010, he switched parties. You see, McKillip isn’t pro-life because he’s Republican. He’s pro-life because he knows that’s what Christ would want. McKillip hasn’t found the change easy for others to swallow. When he walked into the House chamber, twenty-five legislators stood and turned their backs on him.
McKillip’s bill bans abortion after twenty weeks, based on medical evidence that such children can feel pain at that age. Eight other states have similar laws. Both the George Senate and the Georgia House passed the bill and Governor Nathan Deal signed it into law, going into effect January 1st of this year. Now, about 90% of abortions will be curtailed in the state of Georgia.

But McKillip paid another price for his stand. He lost his primary battle to another Republican – who opposed the bill.
Christ made a difference in McKillip’s life. We may not be able to convert our senators and representatives or even the president. But, we can save one soul at a time. Enemies of Christianity have been converted before – think of Saul of Tarsus.
