Courage is a Muscle

Randy Barnett and Josh Blackman wrote in an article in The Weekly Standard (September 14, 2015) on the potential for the next president’s supreme court justices. In that article, the authors remind the reader of a potential court justice from several years ago.

Pamela Karlan taught law at Standford and was promoted by those on the left. Karlan wrote extensively and because of that her views on hot-button issues were widely known. That kept her from even being considered for a spot on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. The reason she was overlooked was widely attributed to the fact that her liberal positions were so well understood.

Many court watchers suggest that potential justices should not write so much and not let their true views be seen and heard. That way, they can make the Supreme Court and then rule as they desire. Such an option was suggested to Karlan.

But, to her credit, she explained: “Courage is a muscle. You develop courage by exercising it. Sitting on the fence is not practice for standing up” (pg. 23).

The word “courage” or a cognate word is found 50 times in the New American Standard Version. The first two instances are found in Deuteronomy 31:6-7: “Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or tremble at them, for the Lord your God is the one who goes with you. He will not fail you or forsake you.” Then Moses called to Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people into the land which the Lord has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you shall give it to them as an inheritance.”

I like that last statement attributed to Ms. Karlan: “Sitting on the fence is not practice for standing up.” Indeed. We will never learn better how to evangelize, we’ll never learn better how to defend the Truth if we continue keeping our mouths shut. Paul wrote: “pray on my behalf, that utterance may be given to me in the opening of my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel” (Eph. 6:19).

Jesus demands His followers to not sit on the fence: “He who is not with Me is against Me; and he who does not gather with Me scatters” (Matt. 12:30). He condemned the church of Christ at Laodicea because they were “lukewarm” and made Him nauseated (Revelation 3:16).

So, pray for courage; pray for self-control; pray for wisdom. Then, speak up and defend Jesus and His Gospel. Sitting on the fence is no practice for standing up.
