Don’t date someone you wouldn’t want to marry

Whom Shall I Marry?

Most of us have done “been there and done that,” but some, have not. Likewise, as parents, grandparents and Bible School teachers, we can and should seek to exert influence ahead of time concerning this all important decision.

First of all, a Christian should marry someone who is eligible for marriage in the sight of God. Remember that Christ says, “whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery” (Mt. 5:32). Jesus does give the exception in Mt. 19:9 for the innocent party. But even so, the Christian will be very careful of such a situation because many falsely claim innocence. Additionally, one should understand that even in a Biblical (rightful) union where there has been a previous marriage, there will be a certain amount of “baggage” that must be worked through.

Secondly, a Christian should marry a Christian. When I use the word “should” I’m not saying that it is sinful to marry a non-Christian, but I’m saying that it is not wise. The Christian’s greatest goal should be to go to heaven (Col. 3:1-2). This goal will be very difficult to obtain if one does not marry a Christian. In the long-run, statistics tell us that the majority of those who marry non-Christians will cease to be faithful. In addition, raising faithful children will also be extremely difficult. There is nothing greater in marriage than sharing the same faith in Christ and then imparting that to your children!

Additionally, not only should one’s marriage choice be a Christian, but the more devout the better! Generally speaking, the more committed a person is to Christ, the better spouse they will make. The character that Scripture develops within us is what makes us a good spouse.

After those first few considerations, things get more subjective, but still there are many important considerations. A Christian should seek to marry someone who will make a good life-long companion… a person who is committed to marriage, trustworthy, and pleasant to be around. Young ladies especially should consider whether a man will provide adequately for his family. Perhaps frequently overlooked, a person should seriously consider the family he or she is marrying into.

One of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever heard is, “Don’t date someone you wouldn’t want to marry.” If one determines during the dating process that they would not want to be married and spend the rest of their life with that person, that is the time for “divorce!” Talk to your children, grandchildren and Bible class students about these things!
