In late summer, beach-goers were surprised at Pompano Beach, FL. A man found an eyeball that had washed up on the beach. What grabbed everyone’s attention about this eyeball is its size – it is about the diameter of a softball! Marine biologists think that the eye belonged to a deep sea squid or perhaps a large swordfish. If the eye is the size of a softball, how big is the rest of the creature? There is no doubt that there are mysteries still to be uncovered in the depths of the oceans.
You and I both know that God created that animal, whatever it is. “The hearing ear and the seeing eye, the LORD has made them both” (Proverbs 20:12). That eye is intricate and specially designed. It is hard to escape the reality that design demands a designer.
Another thought comes to mind as well. We use and depend on our eyes quite often. I rarely remove my eye-glasses. The eyes are important to us. Now, notice what the Old Testament says about God’s children, Israel. “Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings” (Psalm 17:8) and Zechariah 2:8: “For thus said the LORD of hosts, after his glory sent me to the nations who plundered you, for he who touches you touches the apple of his eye…”
Since the church of Christ is now the Israel of God (Galatians 6:16), then the church is the apple of God’s eye. We, Christians, are that important to God. So much so that the book of Revelation – chapter 16, for example – portrays how God feels about those who try to destroy His people. “The fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and its kingdom was plunged into darkness. People gnawed their tongues in anguish and cursed the God of heaven for their pain and sores. They did not repent of their deeds” (16:10-11).
He clearly does not take kindly to those who mock, slander, or ignore the church of Jesus Christ.–Paul Holland
